The 3rd annual 2009 North Carolina State Yo-Yo Contest will be held on June 6th, 2009 at River Park North in lovely Greenville, North Carolina.

Q&A

What are you talking about?
I'm talking about the biggest yo-yo event in the Carolinas! Yo-Yo players of all levels will be learning tons and having a great time at this event!

Where and when, exactly?
The event will take place on Saturday, 6/6/09 (10am-5pm) at the following address:
1000 Mumford Rd, Greenville, NC‎ (click the link above for a map)

Who's running it?
The contest organizer this year is Chris Hicks. Ed Haponik is handling the sponsorship/sanctioning/judging details. (e-mail ed at kinopah@att.net )

Who's sponsoring it?
So far, Yoyonation.com, Yoyoguy.com, yoyoeXpert.com, YoyoFactory, Chaz Pads, Eric Wolff, Saturn Precision YoYo's, OneDrop Yo-Yo's, Yoyojam, and Caribou Lodge YoYo Works have committed to sponsor the event. LOTS more are in the works.

Who's sanctioning the event?
The event is sanctioned by the AYYA and we are actively seeking it from the NYYL.

Do I have to be like a yo-yo master or something?
NO! ALL ability levels (novice to pro) will have something fun to take from this event.

What divisions will you be having?
We'll have five separate "contests" at this event.

There will be a Sport Ladder, in which players will work their way down a list of tricks (miss 2, and you're out).
There will be a Beginners' Contest run by Incredible Flying Objects
There will also be a fixed axle contest for all the "old-schoolers".
We'll also have freestyles in both "1A" and "Open" divisions. These will be judged on the criteria of positive trick elements, negative misses, and performance.
HUGE CHANGE: The NC State Champion this year will be determined by a composite score using performance in the 1a, Open, AND Sport Ladder divisions. There WILL be winners in each separate division, and you don't HAVE to enter all 3, but if you live in NC and want to be state champ, it's probably a good idea. Chris arrived at this decision in effort to promote well-rounded play, and to involve as many NC players as possible in the run for the title.
We'll also have an informal head-to-head "pink-slip best trick" contest at a dinner following the event. bring yo-yo's to lose! ;)
Since it's National Yo-Yo Day, we will ALSO be holding a raffle to benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital. We'll be raffling 2 prizes" a mint-in-package, limited/numbered "Stars & Stripes" John Higby-painted Duncan Freehand zero AND a very rare, very large commemorative Duncan Man patch. $5 raffle tickets will be available at registration, and the drawing will be at the end of the event.

What tricks do I need to know for the "Sport Ladder"?
The tricks for both the 1s and 2s ladders are found here.

And if I want to freestyle?
Freestyles in 1a and open will be 2 minutes in length and set to family-friendly music. If your music is obscene in any way (at the discretion of the contest organizer or judges), you may be disqualified. Your music must be either on a CD or iPod.

Can I do ladder AND freestyle?
YES! This has changed! Since we'll have a separate Beginner division, we've decided to allow ANYONE to participate in ladder.

How about the fixed axle contest?
Yes. Anyone can do that, but you need a fixed axle yo-yo. The fixed axle division will be a different type of ladder, composed of 12 classic and modern 0a (looping)/1a (sleeping) tricks. Missing tricks will not "knock you out". The winner will simply be the person who completes the highest percentage of tricks. A simple long sleeper contest will be used to break a tie to determine the winner. The tricks are as follows:

rock the baby (3 rocks)
split the atom (3 somersaults)
loop the loop (3 reps)
stop and go
u.f.o.
trapeze (with flyaway dismount)
eli hops (2)
drop in the bucket
snap start (to full wind)
shoot the moon (3 reps)
green triangle (any variation)
cold fusion

What's the schedule?
Although it's subject to change, it's looking like this:
10-11am: registration
11-1130am: sport ladder
1130-12pm: fixed axle contest/beginner contest
12pm-1pm: lunch break
1pm-3pm: 1a freestyles
3pm-4pm: open freestyles
4pm-430pm: awards
5-7pm: dinner

Randy Jansen (positive/trick elements), Jon Martin (negative/misses), and others TBA.

What's the price for the event?
The event will cost $10 per competitor. Whether this price will include dinner at the after-party has yet to be determined. Check back here.
